Essential Oil Safety
Essential oils are highly concentrated substances. Just because a product is natural, does not mean it is harmless. Certain oils are capable of burning or irritating the skin and other sensitive tissues. Keep all essential oils away from mucous membranes and eyes. Inappropriate use can often lead to adverse side effects.
Keep all essential oils out of reach of children.
Do not take essential oils internally.
Do not use on or near the eyes.
Do a skin patch test if you are prone to sensitivities.
Keep away from light and heat sources as they are flammable.
If there is any chance of pregnancy, avoid all oils until consulting with a Professional Aromatherapist
Do not use essential oils on the skin before or during exposure to the sun (see below)
Always dilute - less is more!
The following oils can cause “photosensitivity” (increases chance of sunburn):
Bergamot, Grapefruit and Lime (very strong);
Lemon, Mandarin, Tangerine, Orange, Verbena (moderate).
Angelica Root
Clary Sage should be used with care when consuming alcohol and when driving because it can greatly increase the effects of alcohol and reduce mental clarity.
Birch oil can build up in the liver and should be used sparingly.
Marjoram and Chamomile can cause drowsiness, so use caution when driving.
Toxic Oils: Some oils should not be used by anyone except a professional, clinically trained Aromatherapist. Others have such potentially dangerous effects as to make them too risky to experiment with such as Bitter Almond, Yellow Camphor, Horseradish, , Mugwort, Mustard, Pennyroyal, Rue, Southernwood, Tansy and Wormwood.
Carcinogenic oils: Calamus, Sassafras. (Please note: Sassafras EO is banned for use in
cosmetics and toiletries in all of Europe.)
